Going Green for Greater Health
The health impacts of climate change are becoming harder to ignore.
Rising temperatures contribute to heat-related illnesses, 01mosquito-borne diseases02 and the spread of bacteria-related food poisoning.03 Poor air quality can lead to increases in heart and lung diseases.04 The collapse of natural habitats threatens our food systems.
Today, a quarter of premature deaths are a result of environmental factors, demonstrating the inextricable link between the health of the planet and the health of humanity.
At Teva, we are all in for better health. That’s why Healthy People and a Healthy Planet are both key elements of Healthy Future, our renewed sustainability strategy. This Earth Day, and every day, we are taking action to minimize our environmental footprint and help slow the effects of climate change—and encouraging others to join us.
We’re taking bold actions as a company. One of these is our commitment to achieving NetZero across all our operations and value chain by 2045, which means we won’t add more emissions to the environment than those we help clean up or prevent. To make that possible, we’re planning to use 100% renewable electricity by 2035. We’re also minimizing pharmaceutical pollution by producing antibiotics responsibly to prevent the contamination of water sources and help safeguard biodiversity. Reducing pharmaceutical residues in the water also helps to limit the spread of resistance to antibiotics in people, which has been making infections increasingly harder to treat.05
We’re holding our suppliers to high standards. We work with more than 48,000 suppliers, and each of them has their own sphere of influence. We screen suppliers to evaluate their potential exposure to environmental and other risks and engage them in reducing their Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions—which are gases released from indirect sources, like purchased energy, that trap heat in our atmosphere and contribute to climate change. This helps Teva, too, because our suppliers’ energy choices contribute to our own indirect emissions that occur in our value chain – called Scope 3 emissions. Our suppliers also get access to education and resources to support their own environmental journeys through Teva's sponsorship of the Energize program, powered by Schneider Electric.
We’re helping our employees make changes in their own lives. Our employees are the ones behind every action Teva takes, from converting sites to renewable energy to introducing climate-friendly truck fleets. Through our Go Green Together campaign, we also encourage Teva colleagues to take One Green Action Every Day—at home, at work and on their commute—by sharing simple ideas to keep the health of our planet in mind, because small actions can add up.
What’s good for the Earth is good for us, too. By working together to limit our environmental impacts, we can help nurture a healthier planet and ultimately, a healthier future.
